COMPANY PROFILE
South African Biofeedback and Applied Psychophysiology Laboratory (Pty) Ltd. Reg. 2001/025909/07, trading as BIOFEEDBACK LABORATORIES (Pty) Ltd

Who are we?

Biofeedback Laboratories was established in 2001, as the first South African company to offer biofeedback services. Our mission is to provide state-of the art solutions to medical problems through biofeedback. We strongly subscribe to a physicalist view of psychology, namely that the mind does not exist as an entity separate from the body. Because of this theoretical orientation, we would support the discontinuation of the name “psychology” to replace it with “behavioural neuroscience”. Our vision is to be the premier provider of biofeedback services in the SADC, with a reputation for innovation and efficiency. Since the beginning of 2010, the main thrust of our work has been the provision of quantitative EEG services, mainly in Pretoria.

Biofeedback Laboratories is headed by Dr. Joachim Mureriwa, a clinical psychologist with many years of experience as a lecturer and researcher in clinical and neuropsychology at universities in South Africa and Zimbabwe. In addition to university work, Dr. Mureriwa has more than 20 years experience as a psychologist in private practice. He has conducted numerous workshops to organizations and to fellow health professionals on the application biofeedback to health problems, including stress-related disorders.

Dr. Mureriwa is a full member and president of the South African Clinical Neuropsychological Association (SACNA; www.sacna.co.za) for the term 2010 to 2012. He was a founder member of the Biofeedback Association of Southern Africa (BASA).

Our stress model

We define stress as any undesirable event or circumstance, which results in negative emotions such as anger, fear, shame, sadness, frustration and resentment. Stress arises from many sources, including interpersonal relationships such as marriage, the working environment, finances, and health. As people are exposed to stressful situations, their bodies begin to respond in predictable ways, known as the fight, flight, or freeze reactions. These reactions take the form of physiological (biological) changes, namely increased heart rate, changes in breathing patterns, sweating, increased muscle tension, and others. When experienced repeatedly over long periods, these biological responses eventually result in medical complications, such as high blood pressure.

What is biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a form of behavioural treatment which makes use of electronic electronic and other mechanical devices to monitor and display an individual’s biological processes too subtle for normal awareness, such the dilation and contraction of peripheral blood vessels. The individual then uses the feedback provided by the displays to learn how to control the biological responses. We refer to this as physiological self-regulation. When people use biofeedback, the need for medications can be significantly reduced. The self-mastery that is acquired through biofeedback training provides a foundation for health, and many social skills, including assertiveness, communication, negotiating, conflict management, public speaking, taking exams, increased productivity, and peak performance in many spheres of life.
